Jason Momoa Shaves Beard for “Dune 3” and Fans Barely Recognize Him

August 14, 2025

Jason Momoa has done it. The “Aquaman” star just shaved his beard! Fans barely recognized him in a new Instagram video where he revealed his clean-shaven face for the upcoming movie "Dune: Part Three." It is the first time in six years he has gone barefaced, and honestly, the internet isn't sure how to feel.

The video shows Jason Momoa outdoors, buzzing off the beard with a laugh and a groan. “Goddamnit, I hate it!” he says, clearly not thrilled. Then he adds, “Only for you, Denis,” calling out director Denis Villeneuve.

The Instagram video shows him using an electric razor outdoors, visibly amused yet displeased with the result

Yep, the beard is gone, and it is all for "Dune 3!”

Why Jason Momoa Ditched the Beard

In the first "Dune" movie, Duncan Idaho, Momoa’s character, was clean-shaven. So it makes sense. The third film is all about continuing that story. For continuity, the beard had to go. But still, it is a big shift for an actor known for that rugged look.

Jason Momoa hasn’t shaved like this since 2019, and fans remember it clearly. Back then, it was also tied to something bigger. This time around, the shave marks both a character's return and a personal message. Momoa knows the beard is part of his brand. Shaving it off means something.

Fans Are Torn Over the New Look

Pride of Gypsies / IG / Momoa, now 46, last shaved in 2019 for the first Dune film, making this his first beard-free appearance in six years.

The reaction was fast and mixed. Some fans loved seeing Jason Momoa’s jawline again. Others were straight-up confused. One fan nailed it with the comment, “Is this what being catfished feels like?” The guy looks like a different person without the beard.

But even with the new look, Jason Momoa’s charm is still there. His energy hasn’t changed. The beard might be gone, but Duncan Idaho is back, and that is what matters to most people excited about "Dune: Part Three."

Duncan Idaho Returns... As a Clone?

If you have read the books, you know what is coming. "Dune Messiah" brings Duncan Idaho back as a ghola, a kind of clone. That twist opens the door for changes in his look. The clean-shaven face fits the storyline.

This transformation gives the role more weight. Jason Momoa isn’t just reprising a part. He is showing up as a version of Duncan that is different from before. That is why shaving the beard matters. It is a signal that something has changed.

Celeb Kids / IG / In a surprise twist, Jason Momoa’s 16-year-old son, Nakoa-Wolf, is joining him in the movie.

He is playing Leto II Atreides, Paul’s son. That is a major role in the "Dune" series. And no, this wasn’t a favor or a family free pass.

Momoa said his son earned it. “He’s 16 and holding shit down with Denis Villeneuve,” he said proudly. There is a lot riding on this new chapter, for both the story and for the actors bringing it to life.

However, the beard-shaving video wasn’t just for fun. It was also a plug for Mananalu, Jason Momoa’s eco-friendly water brand. He launched the company during the original "Dune" shoot. The brand pushes for less plastic and more sustainable choices.

By linking the beard shave to his eco mission, Momoa made a move that was smart and on-brand. Fans watched to see the beard go, but they also heard his message.
