3 Expensive Foods That’ll Cost You A Pretty Penny

January 25, 2023

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when we say expensive foods? For some, it's caviar; for others, it's foie gras, and the list just goes on. But do you know certain food items are way beyond ‘expensive?.’

Emily Hagen/Food and Wine | Some food items are ridiculously expensive, even for rich people

Yep, you read it right! Certain food items are a tad heavier on the pockets, even if you happen to be uber-wealthy. They're usually a one-time expense where you've to spend a ridiculous amount of money just for a taste or a mere spoonful. Any guesses what we’re talking about?

If not, don't worry, for we’re here to spill the beans! So buckle yourself up and get ready for the biggest shock of your life.

#1 - Matsutake Mushroom

It's funny how mushrooms that grow out of nowhere, even when you haven't planted them, can be as expensive as $1k-$2k per pound. But before you pass judgments, know that we aren't talking about any random mushroom here, either. It's Matsutake mushroom!

Native to Japan's red pine forests, Matsutake mushrooms are pretty rare. In the early days, aristocrats and the Japanese imperial families gifted them as a symbol of fertility, fortune, and happiness. But due to an invasive worm, now their habitats are on the verge of extinction. There might come a time when people won't even know that they ever existed.

#2 - Moose Cheese

Cheese is a favorite item for many. Whether we’re grating it on top of a pizza or spreading it on a slice of bread, there's no way we can say no to cheese. But when it’s priced at $500 for every pound, you might have to think twice before buying.

Moose cheese, produced only at The Elk House in Bjurholm, Sweden, is known for its rich, creamy texture. It's created from the milk of three moose sisters, Gullan, Haelga, and Juno, and that too between the months of May and September only. If you think you can bear the exorbitant price and the traveling expense, do pay a visit to The Elk House and make it a point to enjoy Moose cheese while you can.

#3 - Wagyu Beef

Nothing quite compares to the taste of a delicious cut of rare meat. But if you taste Japan's Wagyu beef, you'll find yourself falling in love with it in no time.

Kept under strict rearing and feeding guidelines, the cows used for Wagyu beef have an enviable marbling of fat around the muscles, and can sell up to $30,000 each. Such is their uniqueness and demand that people are ready to spend an absolute fortune on them. If you also think you can spend $200 for a pound of Wagyu beef, feel free to do so, but know that you're going to savor every single bite.

Wrapping it up

Spending a fortune on a plate of a rare dish can be normal for many but for some, it can take up all their savings. So be smart and think twice before making any choices that you might end up regretting later on!
